I found the bike I always wanted as a kid - beat up, with a wrecked paint job, rusty, and 28 years old. (S/N GL501100, MFD July, 1975 in Chicago.) I want to restore it as close as possible to the way I would've decked it out when I was thirteen. Here's the progress.

75 Schwinn Continental: Another Beautiful 30 Miles...
I rode the Prairie Path to downtown Wheaton again. Utterly gorgeous riding weather; blue skies and upper 50's.
I got another flat on the way home, in the parking lot of my condo.
Cool project thanks for posting about it. I am close, oh so close, to finishing up a late 70s blue varsity that has been a project for about 2 years. As you have found out though its alot of work getting that hunk of rusty metal gleaming, greased and going again is fun. I thought you might enjoy a shot of the 75 Schwinn Catalog I found online http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1971_1980/1975_09.html Also if you do a google search for "NOS Schwinn Bar Tape" you will probably find blue somewhere. (NOS new old stock just like for old cars) although you might find cork gel in a very close match for less and it will be more comfortable -especially on those long rides. Enjoy the process and the rides
Oh and while they are not Schwinn approved you can get some nice blue housing cable and brake sets from Velo Orange. I run them on my commuter and think they look pretty sharp and are a good deal brake set http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/brakes/pads-parts/vo-colored-brake-cable-kits.html
Shifter set http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/shifting-freewheels-cassettes/cables/vo-colored-deraileur-cable-kit.html
Ryan, imagine that, my phone works for posting here, but the latest top-dawg PC browsrs don't. Great info, and thank you. I'd love to see pics of the Varsity when finished. I had one in green brand new as a teenager, it was a 1975.
